Hello, I’m new here and I have a question. I have seen the iconic sword hand in many jian sets and I would love it if somebody could let me know about its usage.
    Thanks

Hello! The sword hand is essential in the internal sword style to balance out the movement and direct the wielder’s intention to the sword. There are many mystic explanations about that hand, but practically, it will balance out your attack and defenses similar to french floret fencing. The Tai Chi aspect of the sword hand of guiding intention and power over it through the movement is related to the Yin Yang balance within the body. You should not understand it abstractly but in a practical way. To fully understand the sword hand, you should come to the part of Liang Yi – two extremes – in our lineage. Naturally, one starts learning Jibengong and goes into Tai Chi and then Liang Yi to fully understand the sword hand’s use.

So no, the sword hand won’t make your movement stronger; it will stabilize and focus your power. But to fully understand it, practice is needed – starting with the foundation.
