    知人者智 自知者明

    勝人者有力 自勝者強

    知足者富 強行者有志

    不失其所者久 死而不亡者壽

     

    One that 1 knows other people is wise. One that knows self is clear 2.

    One who defeats 3 others has power. One who defeats self is strong.

    One who is content 4 is wealthy. One who diligently acts 5 has aspiration 6.

    One who does not lose one’s place 7 lasts 8. One who dies but does not perish 9 has longevity 10.

     

    Footnotes:

    1.       者 (Zhě), pronoun that follows a description, referring to one/those that fit(s) the described feature or behaviour.

    2.       明 (Míng), bright, or clear, meaning the person can see things clearly.

    3.       勝 (Shèng), to win over someone.

    4.       知足 (Zhī Zú) to know enough, meaning to be satisfied.

    5.       強 (Qiáng), in ancient time was synonym to 勤 (Qín), diligent, hard working.

    6.       志 (Zhì), aspiration, hope of achievement.

    7.       所 (Suǒ), place. In Chinese one’s place means a fitting role or suitable environment.

    8.       久 (Jiǔ), long time, meaning to last.

    9.       死 (Sǐ), to die. 亡 (Wáng), to die, or to perish. To die but not perish, means one is remembered by others, or one’s legacy remains.

    10.   壽 (Shòu), to have long life, or longevity.
