Yuán Xiùgāng (袁修刚), Daoist name Shī Mào (师懋), is a fifteenth-generation Sānfēngpài (三丰派) disciple and the founder of the Wudang Sānfēng Taoist Academy (武当山道家传统武术馆). He was among the first Wudang masters to teach the Sānfēng tradition to international students and has played a central role in bringing the Wudang internal arts to a global audience.

Background and Training

Yuán Xiùgāng was born in 1971. He began martial arts training at the age of seven. At sixteen, he spent three years studying Shàolín Gōngfu in Hénán Province — a background in external martial arts that provided a comparative foundation for his later internal arts training.

Drawn to internal martial arts through a desire to heal childhood rheumatism, Yuán traveled to Wudang Mountain in 1991. There he became a disciple of Grandmaster Zhōng Yúnlóng (钟云龙), the fourteenth-generation head of the Sānfēngpài. Together with Zhōng Xuéchāo (钟学超, Master Bing), he is recognized as one of the Grandmaster's very first students and among the first fifteenth-generation Sānfēngpài lineage holders.

In 1994, Yuán was selected for the Wudang Daoist Wǔshù Performance Team and was initiated as a Daoist priest at the Purple Cloud Palace (紫霄宫 Zǐxiāo Gōng), Wudang's largest and most important temple. Over the following years he mastered the complete Sānfēngpài curriculum — Tàijíquán, Bājíquán, Xíngyìquán, Bāguàzhǎng, Tàiyǐ practices, Qìgōng, meditation, and herbal medicine — and was recognized as a national expert in Qìgōng and meditation.

The Sānfēng Taoist Academy

Yuán established the Wudang Sānfēng Taoist Academy near the base of Wudang Mountain, creating one of the largest and most prominent Sānfēngpài training facilities. The school has trained students from around the world and became a primary entry point for international practitioners seeking authentic Wudang instruction.

The academy teaches the full Sānfēngpài curriculum in a structured progression, from fundamentals through advanced forms and internal cultivation. Yuán personally instructs with the assistance of trained coaches, maintaining direct involvement in the teaching process.

Teaching in English

Yuán Xiùgāng is one of a small number of Sānfēngpài masters who teach in English. Multiple independent sources reference his English-language instruction as a significant factor in making the Wudang tradition accessible to non-Chinese students. His Wǔxíng Qìgōng (五行气功, Five Animals Qìgōng) teaching follows its own specific sequence — Dragon → Tiger → Leopard → Snake → Crane (Water → Metal → Wood → Earth → Fire) — a modified controlling cycle that represents a distinctly Wudang Daoist approach to the Five Animals practice, differing from both the classical Huà Tuó sequence and the Shàolín order.

Lineage Verification

Yuán Xiùgāng's lineage position is among the most thoroughly corroborated of any living Sānfēngpài master. He is referenced by name in the Okanagan Valley Wudang lineage history, the Wudang Toronto lineage page, the Wikipedia article on Wudangquan, the Chinese Clock Qigong research site, the SoCal Tai Chi Wudang documentation, the Taiping Institute, and multiple film documentaries (including the Hong Kong TV documentary "Kung Fu Quest"). His Daoist name Shī Mào (师懋) follows the documented fifteenth-generation naming convention.

He is the direct master of several sixteenth-generation lineage holders who teach internationally, extending the Sānfēngpài transmission into the next generation across multiple countries.
