Fù Zǐ (附子) — Aconite (Prepared)
Fù Zǐ (附子) is the most powerful Yáng-restoring herb in the Chinese materia medica — historically called "the king of the hundred herbs" for its capacity to rescue collapsed Yáng. The name means "attached child" — 附 (Fù, attached) and 子 (Zǐ, child, seed) — referring to the lateral root (daughter root) that grows attached to the mother root of the aconite plant. It is also one of the most toxic herbs in the pharmacopoeia, requiring careful processing before use.
Botanical name: Aconitum carmichaelii Debeaux (Family: Ranunculaceae)
Part used: Lateral (daughter) root, after mandatory processing
Nature: Hot
Flavor: Pungent, sweet
Meridians entered: Heart, Kidney, Spleen
Traditional Actions
Fù Zǐ rescues devastated Yáng, warms the Gate of Vitality (命门 Mìng Mén, the Kidney fire), expels cold, and relieves pain. It is the sovereign herb for Yáng collapse — cold extremities, profuse cold sweating, weak pulse, and loss of consciousness — and for deep internal cold conditions with severe pain.
Its intensely hot nature makes it the polar opposite of cold herbs like Huáng Lián. Where Huáng Lián clears fire, Fù Zǐ generates it. This positions Fù Zǐ at the extreme Yáng end of the herbal spectrum.
Processing is essential. Raw aconite contains aconitine, a highly toxic alkaloid that can cause cardiac arrhythmia and death. All Fù Zǐ used in clinical practice has been processed (炮制 Pào Zhì) through extended boiling, soaking in brine, or other methods to reduce the aconitine content to safe levels. The most common forms are Pào Fù Zǐ (炮附子, dry-fried) and Zhì Fù Zǐ (制附子, prepared).
Key Classical Formulas
- Sì Nì Tāng (四逆汤, Frigid Extremities Decoction): Fù Zǐ, Gān Jiāng (dry ginger), Gāncǎo. An emergency formula for Yáng collapse with cold extremities.
- Jīn Guì Shèn Qì Wán (金匮肾气丸, Kidney Qì Pill): A gentle Kidney Yáng tonic formula. Fù Zǐ and Ròu Guì are added to the Yīn-nourishing base of Liù Wèi Dì Huáng Wán to warm the Gate of Vitality.
- Zhēn Wǔ Tāng (真武汤, True Warrior Decoction): Named after Zhēnwǔ (真武), the Daoist deity of Wudang Mountain. Treats Kidney and Spleen Yáng deficiency with water retention.
Cautions
Fù Zǐ must never be used in raw form. Even processed forms require careful dosage and should only be prescribed by qualified practitioners. It is contraindicated in pregnancy, in conditions of true heat or Yīn deficiency, and in patients with cardiac conditions. Classical teaching notes incompatibility with Bàn Xià, Guā Lóu, Bèi Mǔ, Bái Jí, and Bái Liǎn. This article describes traditional uses and does not constitute medical advice.
